The Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge, California is known for its Camellia forest. It was previously owned by E. Manchester Brody, who owned the Los Angeles Daily News, before donating it to the Los Angeles County in 1953. Today, the Descanso Gardens now has an international rosarium, a Japanese garden, a lilac garden, and a bird sanctuary.

If you have a passion for flowers and nature, the Descanso Gardens are for you. You can stroll around the garden at your own pace, join different walking tours and join the narrated tram tour. The kids can also enjoy the Enchanted Railroad, a 1/8th replica of a train which travels around a small section of the garden.

To experience the Gardens fully, it is best to go in spring where most of the flowers are in full bloom. It was very unfortunate for us to go there in the dead of winter because only the camellias and a few other flowers where in bloom. That doesn’t mean we didn’t have fun, though. We went around the whole garden from 10:30 AM to 4 PM and didn’t even notice how fast time flew by.

I love how the flowers and trees were labeled which enabled us to identify some of the flowers in bloom. In the International Rosarium, some of the roses were in full bloom while the others were not. We found a smattering here and there and I happily took a picture.

I know it would have been better to visit the garden during springtime and I am definitely going back to check it out.
