Coraline in 3D

After reading the book Coraline by Neil Gaiman, I couldn’t wait so see the movie! Knowing that movie adaptations usually end up in disappointment (read Twilight), I decided not to get my hopes up. I couldn’t hold my excitement when the time came to see it, though because I would be seeing it in 3D! Yes, this is the second time that I saw a 3D movie, the first one was A Journey to the Center of the Earth with Brendan Frasier.
The movie adaptation of Coraline, directed by Henry Selick, is a stop motion animation film reminiscent of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas & The Corpse Bride (both are my favorites) and is released in Digital 3D. With $16.8 million in the box office on opening week alone, and positive reviews given by critics, I expect Coraline to be one of the best animated films in 3D.
I’m not going to go on a play-by-play review of the film in respect to those who still haven’t seen it but I have a few things to say. The movie itself is basically the same as the book version with a few minor…er changes. A new angle has been added to the film version with the presence of a new character, Wybie Lovat (Wyborn), whose grandmother’s sister is one of the ghost children who where captured by the other mother. I thought this was an interesting twist to the story but since Wybie helped Coraline defeat The Other Mother’s right hand. I loved the “fight” sequence there, though and it still gave me the creeps. Now, don’t get me started on “The Other Miss Spink and Miss Forcible” because I thought they looked amazing!
The other thing that I loved in the film was the music! I loved the music Exploration by Bruno Coulaise. It was spot on and worked well with the whole feel to the film. Kudos to this one! This is going to my Ipod playlist!
Now, the 3D aspect of the film, well, I found that it lacked a bit of a 3D feel to it. I had hoped that it would be more three dimensional like the Ice Age 3D but it it wasn’t. I loved the play of colors in the “other garden” though and I believe the creators really made a beautiful interpretation of the book.
I give this film 4.5 stars. I will definitely grab a DVD copy and I hope I can get it in 3D!
