The Huntington Library is one the world’s great cultural, research, and educational centers and was founded by Henry E. Huntington in 1919. The Huntington is located in San Marino, California and is one of the must see places in Southern California.
The Huntington has a library, art collections, and botanical gardens arranged by theme; Japanese, Chinese, Shakespear, Australian, Palm, etc. with over 14,000 different varieties of plans. Of the 207 acres, 120 are landscaped and are open to visitors.

Unfortunately, we were only able to see a part of the Huntington Gardens due to time constraints. However, that doesn’t mean that we didn’t enjoy the place immensely. I especially loved their Chinese Gardens called the Liu Fang Yuan (Garden of Flowing Fragrance) because it gave me an insight of what a Chinese Garden would look like. This garden was patterned upon the private Chinese gardens with a man-made pool full of lotus plants. This time of the year, they are not in bloom and you can see the alien-like spores sticking out of the water. We were fortunate to catch a heron having his noon-day meal and I managed to snap a few shots of him in action. Strolling through the covered walkways, bridges and pavilions give you a wonderful view of the whole garden in different angles. The balance between water, limestone, and plants give a distinctly Chinese-painting feel to the place.

The Huntington’s Japanese Garden is America’s oldest, most elaborate, and gracefully matured Japanese gardens. We weren’t able to see their Japanese Tea House and the Rock and Sand Garden but we were able to stroll around the beautiful arched wooden bride in the middle of the pond.

Walking through their Australian Garden felt like walking through another world. I saw a lot of weird looking flowers there and was glad they labeled all their plants or I would never have identified them.
On the way out, we passed by the Jungle Garden and it almost felt like walking through a thick Jurassic forest. I also felt quite at home because most of the plants that I saw grow in the Philippines.
I give my trip five stars. We’re definitely going back.
